This forged and polished bronze bowl is from a collection
David
has developed that is
inspired by the unique and spectacular geology of Dorset's Jurassic Coast.
Round bronze bars are flattened and hammered with specially made tools to create a texture reflecting the ancient sedimentary rock formations along the coast.
The textured metal is then carefully beaten into a dished spiral suggestive of ammonites found in the rocks.
Heat from the forge creates a dark and tenacious firescale on the surface of the metal. This contributes to the bowl's wonderfully rich and worked finish.
This firescale is selectively polished away to partially expose the
underlying lustrous bronze whilst still leaving traces of the contrasting darker scale.
Other bowls in the collection are made from
stainless steel,
rusty weathered steel and
burnished and waxed iron.
