H97 Stair Railings Based on Musical Notes and Notation

"... stylish, elegant, and bespoke metalwork ..."

Kingswood, Surrey

These spectacular stair railings were commissioned for the basement of a music lover's house; hence the Wurlitzer! The design was based on a series of highly stylised musical notes and notation that cascade and flow down the stairs. Treble clefs feature as newel posts.

The handrail follows a tightly winding path as it curves down the stairs and great care was taken to ensure that it flows smoothly continuously as it does so. The use of straight lines was avoided wherever possible and all fixings were either hidden or blended into the design. Rather than being simply laser cut silhouettes, the various elements were forged to shape and overlaid to give the railings a 3D, almost sculptural quality. The finish is a matt, textured and dark grey micaceous iron oxide paint containing tiny reflective mica particles that catch the light and complement the granite tiles.

Some pictures of the work being made can be seen in the blog in this link.
