David has long been drawn to the rich palette of colours offered by the diverse family of
copper and
bronze alloys. This collection of stylised and whimsical bird sculptures is an expression of this fascination.
The sculptures are cast from pure copper, silicon-bronze, cupronickel, aluminium-bronze and gunmetal ... with a very special mixed metal sculpture in copper/aluminum-bronze.
The birdies are first modelled in clay, then cast using the ancient and time honoured lost wax, or cire perdue, method of hot metal casting. Once cast they are given a deep rich
polish to give
the birds a wonderfully tactile feel.
Despite having no wings, feet or feathers, they are instantly recognisable as birds!
Their tails and beaks are refined at the wax stage; each bird is completely unique and a limited edition of one.
David only ever use foundry cast bronze, never the vastly inferior resin, or cold cast bronze.
Some insights and information about the casting
process can be seen on
this blog page.
