This richly detailed garden gate has a contemporary design, yet was handmade using traditional
blacksmithing techniques
that date back thousands of years. Instead of using electrical welding, the
gates were joined using
rivets and
hot punched holes. This expressive
joinery is a design feature of
the gate, as is the lack of a conventional frame. Frameless gates and "suggested
profiles" regularly feature in Verdigris's portfolio.
The taller uprights were hand forged to a
serif that progressively enlarges
and lines up to suggest a semi circle. This is a prominent motif featured
throughout the
walled garden
in which
the gate is situated.
The owner also commissioned these complementary
railings and this equally as detailed
gate.
