This garden sculpture was designed to capture the movement and energy of an unfurling fern
exuberantly bursting into life.
Its grace and delicacy belies the strength of the
galvanised
steel it is made from. This allows the sculpture to gently move in a breeze yet withstand the rigours an English winter.
As with all
David Hyde's fern sculptures, the pinnae (leaflets) were individually hand forged for life and expression.
They feature a grooved stem which gives them strength and adds to the 3D sculptural quality.
The fronds were assembled by carefully placing each pinna so that the ferns gracefully unfurl in a very naturalistic manner.
Each pinnule (tip) was slightly domed, giving them a 3D quality and hinting at spores when viewed from the back.
A pair of sculptural gates based around similar fern fronds can be seen
