G142 Metal Gate and Sculpture Inspired by Ferns

"... stylish, elegant, and bespoke metalwork ..."

Purbeck, Dorset

This wonderfully expressive gate is a development of a previously commissioned gate inspired by ferns and fern detailing.

The gate was designed to be both functional and sculptural. It features many of David Hyde's signature details such as the tactile latch and the frameless construction that avoids the use of straight lines. The design is a creative blend of lady fern fronds, Hart's tongue fern leaves and fiddleheads, each strategically placed to maintain strength where needed.

The ferns' pinnae (leaflets) were individually hand shaped for life and expression. They feature a grooved stem which gives them strength and adds to the 3D sculptural quality of the gate. The fronds were assembled by carefully placing each pinna so that the ferns gracefully unfurl in a very naturalistic manner. Each pinnule (tip) was slightly domed, giving them a 3D quality and hinting at spores when viewed from the back.

The finish is aged galvanised steel offering decades of rust protection.

The fern inspired gate was designed to be both functional and a piece of sculpture
