These unusual forged steel stair balustrades were commissioned for an old coach house
dating back to the 18th century. Although they have a contemporary
design, they
were made using the same techniques and skills that blacksmiths would
have used hundreds of years ago.
The forged motifs were shaped by hammering
and moving the steel whilst hot.
A similar process was used to draw out the elegant
tapers seen in the balustrades.
Ballnut and
wrapped
joinery feature throughout.
The metal was given a burnished and
waxed finish to highlight its tones and textures,
which complement the aged timbers of the property.
