The guiding principles of the Arts and Crafts movement were simple design and traditional craftsmanship; both are exemplified in these
richly detailed
wrought iron handrails. They were designed with these ideas in mind to complement a
pair of gates previously commissioned for the driveway of this period property.
Traditional
blacksmithing
techniques such as
hot punched holes,
ball nut fixings and
upset bar ends were used to create the handrails. The "buds" were made by splitting the steel and
forging them to shape, more information on this process can be seen on
this page.
