This page features a sculpture based on a quintessential cottage garden favourite; the aquilegia (also known as columbines or granny's bonnets).
As with all of
David Hyde's botanical sculptures, it starts with a
detailed study and observation of the real flower.
A discussion of the study behind this sculpture and its development can be seen on this blog page.
The petals were carefully hand beaten to form the main "trumpets" and its trailing spurs that continue behind the flower to form the most distinguishing feature of an aquilegia.
Special tooling was made to form the five surrounding sepals and allow them to flow authentically into the stem behind the trumpets.
All the various parts of the flower were then meticulously assembled to avoid showing any obvious welds.
This sculpture is approximately 1m tall and the flower 60cm across.
Eventually David will use the insights he has gained developing this work to create a much larger multi-headed aquilegia sculpture.
