The rich naturally worked character and patina of this forged bowl bears witness to the nature of its creation.
Thick brass sheet is repeatedly heated in a forge and hand beaten to shape with many hundreds of hammer blows. Each time it is heated, the metal develops a subtle but tenacious dark scale on its surface.
This is partially, and gradually, beaten into the metal. Each hammer blow creates its own unique witness mark.
The many nuanced and individual marks build up to create a wonderfully expressive finish and patina.
The edge of the bowl is carefully hammered to create a texture
that suggests rime and hoarfrost. This acts as a counterpoint and accent to the worked texture.
