Steel: Burnt and Sparking

Its burnt appearance shows that this piece of metal has been left in the forge too long. A blacksmith uses the sparks given off as a clue as to when to remove his work from the fire. It should be withdrawn just at the point when it starts to spark. If left in any longer it will burn, and is considered wasted. This is the origin of the expression "too many irons in the fire".
