The flowing curvilinear lines within these contemporary
steel stair railings were made by
forging the
metal. This was hammered whilst hot, shaping it into the sweeping and flowing curves which make up the railings.
The joinery of the railings was used as a design feature. Rather than being welded, the bars were connected using
ballnuts and
hot punched holes. The spacers are
copper and
bronze; these metals were chosen to
contrast with the tones of the forged steel.
The stair railings shown on
this page have a similar design but with smaller gaps, whilst
these railings use simpler welded joinery.
