The Piazza, Covent Garden 2005
These contemporary stair balustrades and balcony railings were commissioned for a boutique in the Piazza, Covent Garden. The design combines a graphic quality with flowing curves typically found in Art Nouveau metalwork.
The balustrades are made from steel which
has been burnished and waxed.
Their flowing curvilinear elements were shaped by hot forging the
metal, giving its surface a rich and expressive texture. The "joggles" where
the bars cross over each other, and the weaving in and out of the curved elements,
add to the rich detailing within the balustrades and give them a three dimensional
Similar balustrades used in a domestic setting can be seen in this page.
