S29: Baby Black Metal Dragon

"... stylish, elegant, and bespoke metalwork ..."

Private Commission; 2003

This sculpture of a baby dragon was made by David Hyde by carefully welding small pieces of steel together to create a unique and individual range of skin tones and textures. The welding process used an intense heat to fuse the steel together and blacken the metal.

His legs and feet were forged to shape using traditional blacksmithing techniques and his skin was selectively burnished to add highlights to its darker tones. A hard wax finish was then used to protect the steel and enhance the character of his skin.
