Ballnuts are custom made fasteners used by blacksmiths where conventional engineer's hexagonal nuts and bolts would be unsightly. Whilst they serve a practical purpose, they can also be used as a design feature in their own right, as the above gates and balustrades demonstrate. Ballnuts look particularly effective when they are surrounded by the swellings of a hot punched hole.
